Clubs and Organizations
An Elmhurst education is much more than teachers and classrooms.
We know that well-rounded scholars need varied environments to stimulate their minds and put what they learn into practice. That’s why the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures provides its students with a comprehensive program of study that extends well outside lecture halls.
Alpha Mu Gamma
The Alpha Mu Gamma national collegiate foreign language honorary society recognizes outstanding academic achievement in the study of second languages. Dr. Beatriz Gómez-Acuña is the faculty adviser of our chapter and serves as national president of the society.
The Theta Upsilon Chapter at Elmhurst University is especially active with 15 to 20 initiates per year, and consistently supports student travel to, and participation in, the national conference.
La Table Française
La Table Française provides an opportunity for all Elmhurst University students interested in Francophone language studies to have a meeting place in order to discuss culture, provide conversation opportunities, and language enrichment. With meetings twice a month, this is a chance for even the busiest of students to get together to talk, laugh, watch films, and enjoy French foods.
La Table française est une association étudiante ayant pour but un lieu de conversation, d’échange, et d’enrichissement culturel ouverte à tout étudiant qui s’intéresse à la francophonie, sa langue, ses cultures, et ses traditions.
Der Deutschklub, the University’s German Club, was founded in 2017. It promotes social and academic events related to German language and culture. Events include German Movie Night on the first Friday of the month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and the Stammtisch (German Round Table) on the third Friday of the month from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The International Club is a support group for international students as well as a highly active social club for those who are interested in cultural diversity here at Elmhurst University. They provide guidance to students who are unfamiliar with life in the United States, especially college life. They also educate the campus about international issues, bring many different cultures and ideas together through numerous educational and fun-filled events throughout the year as a group, as well as strive to unite the efforts of various organizations! They invite everyone who would like to learn and experience different cultures, languages, traditions, cuisine, music, sports, and lifestyles to come join them! The Department of World Languages has supported and collaborated with International Club in many ways throughout the years. Latino Students Association
The purpose of LSA is to acknowledge, embrace, and share Latino/a heritage and culture with the Elmhurst University community. The mission is to be positive and active role models as LSA leaders, aiming to inspire and promote a culturally vibrant community on campus. One of LSA’s primary concerns is organizing a multicultural and inclusive environment for all students on campus. Since 2001, Dr. Chris Travis has served formally as Advisor to LSA for nine different years and is always actively involved.
