Elmhurst College will host an electronics recycling event on Saturday, October 19, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the Mill Theatre, at the corner of Myrtle Street and Park Avenue.
Electronics of all kinds will be accepted, including old computers, cell phones, hair dryers, toasters and microwaves. State law prohibits consumers from disposing of electronic items with ordinary trash, and landfills are prohibited from accepting them. Electronics can be broken down into glass, plastics, and metals, and then reused in manufacturing.
Items that will not be accepted include those containing hazardous waste, radioactive waste, biohazardous waste and devices that contain mercury, such as car batteries, smoke alarms and thermostats.
For more information, including a list of acceptable items, visit our sustainability website.
A larger Recycling Extravaganza event will be held next April. At that event, a variety of nonprofit social service and green-focused organizations will be on hand to take not only electronics but also a number of other kinds of recyclable and reusable items.
