Weather Closures and Delays

It is Elmhurst University’s policy to maintain its normal schedule, even when weather conditions are inclement. But on rare occasions, severe weather may lead to the cancellation of classes or the closing of campus.

The Chicago area is continuing to experience extreme weather, which is expected to increase in severity and continue through tomorrow. In response to the current conditions and predictions by the National Weather Service, the campus has made some changes to campus operations for the next 24-36 hours.

The safety of our campus community is our priority.

The weather forecast calls for 8-14+ inches of snow in the Chicago area. Elmhurst University campus is expected to get 8-11 inches of snow between today and tomorrow. Very cold temperatures, strong winds, slippery conditions and blowing snow are expected to cause limited visibility and unsafe travel. Unless absolutely necessary, refrain from being outside or traveling. Roadways are expected to be hazardous through tomorrow, and snow removal will be an ongoing effort both on and off campus. Most snowfall will have stopped by tomorrow afternoon, and temperatures will get relatively warmer through the week.

Students should communicate with their faculty regarding classes, especially any in-person classes scheduled between 6 p.m. tonight through Tuesday evening, to confirm whether and how they are meeting.

University employees should work with their respective supervisor regarding their work schedule and need to report to work.

The Frick Center will remain open for regular building hours, with current COVID mitigation guidelines in place. The Information Desk will be closed.

The Tyrrell Fitness Center and Tom Roberts Family Weight Room will close at 4 p.m. today, remain closed through Tuesday, and reopen at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The A.C. Buehler Library will close at 6 p.m. today, remain closed on Tuesday, and reopen for regular business hours on Wednesday morning.

Chartwells cafeteria and food services will remain open and available as scheduled.

As we look ahead to late Tuesday and Wednesday, we are requesting everyone assist with snow plowing and removal efforts on campus.
Facilities Management staff will work to clear snow from campus parking lots, driveways, walkways, fields and other campus locations. Please assist their efforts by moving to and parking in plowed spaces around campus so that they can plow and remove snow. If you are currently in a parking space or area that needs to be cleared, please move your vehicle to a parking space in a part of the campus that has already been cleared of snow. The following parking lot areas are available to be used for parking until snow can be removed. Please use any of these areas on Tuesday and Wednesday, so snow can be cleared. These parking areas will have the overnight parking restrictions temporarily lifted for the next 2 days.

  • Alexander Parking Lot (west end – highlighted in yellow below)
  • Schaible Science Center Parking Lot
  • Goebel Hall Parking Lot

For your convenience, snow shovels are available for checkout from the Public Safety Office.
Additionally, we are reminding everyone to:

  • Avoid parking in unplowed parking spaces (or adjacent spaces) to allow plows to navigate the area
  • Do not park on snow mounds which will be removed throughout the next week
  • Avoid blocking or parking in fire lanes, handicap spaces or loading zones

Elmhurst University leadership continues to monitor the weather and any impact it may have on campus.

Please continue to monitor any messages sent through EU Alert and social media and other publicly available resources.

Campus closure will be announced when weather conditions are such that it would be very unsafe for students or employees to attempt to go to work or class. Only weather-essential personnel would be required to report to work.

If it becomes necessary to cancel classes or close the campus due to severe weather conditions, information will be communicated to you through these channels:

  • EU Alert: Text and voicemail to all subscribers
  • Elmhurst University website:
  • Social media channels: Facebook and Twitter
  • Campuswide email
  • Local TV and radio stations

The announcement of daytime class cancellations will be posted by 6:00 a.m. that morning. Evening class cancellation information will be posted by 3:00 p.m. unless stated otherwise.

Unless it is an emergency, please do not call Public Safety simply for closure information, as personnel will be addressing campus public safety issues and weather-related emergencies.
