Safety and Security Reports

The Department of Public Safety provides several ways to access information about campus crime and safety.

In its reporting, the University complies with federal regulations, including the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Public Safety Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and the Higher Education Opportunity Act, which is a federal law that requires colleges and universities to disclose specific information about campus crime and security and safety policies. Below are reports and policies that are available to the public.

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

Published each year on October 1, this report provides annual crime and residential fire safety statistics to comply with the mandatory reporting requirements of both the Higher Education Opportunity Act and the Clery Act.

Timely Warnings

If a major safety incident occurs on campus, the Department of Public Safety will issue Timely Warnings and Crime Alerts through the EU Alert system. These warnings are in compliance with the “Timely Warning” provision of the Clery Act. These warnings and alerts are used when there has been a crime or incident on or near campus that poses a safety threat to members of the campus community. In instances where there is no immediate danger to the community, a Crime Alert may be distributed to the University community by campus email, displayed on the myElmhurst Portal, and posted in various high-visibility locations on campus.

Daily Crime Log

The Department of Public Safety maintains a Daily Crime Log to record all criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to the Department of Public Safety. The Daily Crime Log provides crime statistics/information throughout the year, and it is used to support the information provided in the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report (Clery Report). The Daily Crime Log is maintained and updated within two business days of the date the crime is reported to the Department of Public Safety. Dispositions on the Daily Crime Log are maintained for 60 days after a crime is included in the log. A copy of the University’s Daily Crime Log may be requested from the Department of Public Safety for review. The crime log for the most recent 60-day period is immediately available for public inspection, upon request, during normal business hours. Any portion of the log that is older than 60 days is open to public inspection, upon request, and made available within two business days of the request.
