The Newman Center for Catholic ministry celebrates our ongoing work to build a home for all Catholics at Elmhurst University.
Weekly Mass
Working with our local Roman Catholic parish, Immaculate Conception, our Blue Jay Catholic student organization and our Catholic Chaplain, Fr. Tom Paul, we invite all to join us for weekly Catholic student Mass on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. at IC (134 Arthur St, Elmhurst).
Blue Jay Catholics
The Blue Jay Catholics student organization meets regularly on campus to plan programs, host conversation, have meals together and offer community service opportunities. We also send students to national Catholic university student gatherings. Their academic advisors on campus are Phil Riordan and Peggy Scheu.
The Annual Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Lecture
The Bernardin Lecture brings prominent Catholic theologians to campus to discuss faith-related issues. The series honors the late Cardinal Bernardin of the Chicago archdiocese, who died in 1996, 10 days before he was scheduled to speak at the University. The beloved cardinal is the recipient of Elmhurst University’s highest honor, the Niebuhr Medal.
Past Speakers:
- Sister Helen Prejean
- Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J.
- Father Jack Wall
- Monsignor Kenneth Velo
The Catholic community is also working with the new “Religious Literacy Project of Elmhurst University.”
Catholic Staff and Faculty
These academic and administrative individuals are deeply committed to the Roman Catholic faith tradition and seek to build a spirt of openness, intellectual rigor and engagement on campus.
Service Opportunities
The Newman Center works to assist students in exploring service opportunities locally, nationally and internationally with groups like the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and other Catholic organizations. Through the work of campus leaders like Professor of English Mary Kay Mulvaney, the University has an especially close relationship with Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago.
Outreach
- The Office of Admission works with area Catholic high schools on the recruitment of Catholic students.
- The Office of Institutional Advancement is working to build a Catholic alumni network.
- The University maintains and encourages relationships with Catholic Theological Union (CTU), Mundelein Seminary and the Office of Young Adults and Youth Ministries of the Diocese of Joliet.
