LGBTQIA+ at Elmhurst

A Welcoming Community

On our inclusive campus, students of all sexual orientations and gender identities find safety, acceptance and the resources and support they need to thrive.

Elmhurst celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community with everything from academic programs to student organizations to a lecture series focused specifically on LGBTQIA+ issues. Here’s an overview.

Student Advocacy

The Queer Straight Association (QSA), a student-run advocacy group, provides a support network and sponsors awareness events such as the Big Queer Gathering, National Coming Out Day and Pride Week.

All-Gender Restrooms

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment, we’ve designated 10 restrooms on campus as all-gender restrooms. These facilities are located in each residence hall and in several other buildings; check the campus map for details.

LGBTQIA+ Lecture Series

Each year, we invite a prominent speaker to campus to deliver the William R. Johnson Guestship, an annual forum on the issues and stories of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Academic Programs

If you’re interested in studying LGBTQIA+ issues, explore the concentration in LGBTQ Studies through the Intercultural Studies Program. It’s an opportunity to engage in critical analysis of contemporary issues within the intersections of gender and sexuality.

Campus Resources and Support

On campus, a strong network of individuals and offices offers the support you need. For example:

  • SAFE (Staff, Administrators and Faculty for Equality) offers a strong, confidential support network for the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • The Office of Diversity and Inclusion fosters a supportive and inclusive campus environment through special events and other activities.
  • The Wellness Center provides counseling and other services for LGBTQIA+ students.
  • The University Chaplaincy offers support for students in times of transition.

Scholarship Resources for LGBTQIA+ Students

Organizations across the nation have created special scholarships to support the LGBTQIA+ community. Here’s a sampling.
