Dr. Coughlan completed her bachelor’s degree at Elmhurst University, her master’s degree at Marquette University, and her clinical doctorate at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Her research focused on coaching Spanish-speaking families of bilingual preschool-aged children with complex communication needs (CCN) who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). She joined Elmhurst University as adjunct clinical faculty in 2018, and she now serves as a full-time faculty member, beginning in the Fall of 2024.

At Elmhurst University, she has taught a number of undergraduate and graduate classes, including Professional Writing in Speech-Language Pathology, Speech Sound Disorders, and Research Methods. She also supervises graduate students in the on-campus clinic. Before entering academia, she completed bilingual (Spanish-English) evaluations for children leaving early intervention (EI) services and entering the school setting. She also worked with bilingual students with CCN and assisted with obtaining various bilingual AAC systems for students with significant needs from early childhood through the elementary school level. She has worked with children of various ages and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
