Professional Experience

Eric Britt participated in a “life-changing” music business internship at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute.

A music degree from Elmhurst opens the door to a wealth of careers.

Performance Opportunities

Students have myriad opportunities to perform on and off campus.

  • Solo recitals, small ensemble performances and large ensemble concerts are presented to all students on the campus.
  • Local clubs, organizations and churches make requests of Elmhurst University musicians, as do numerous venues in Chicago.
  • There are also performing opportunities at professional conferences and programs in the United States and abroad.

Internships

Do you want to work for a record company, a radio station or a major music festival? You can, while you’re still an undergraduate!

Our students have completed internships with:

  • The Chicago Symphony Orchestra
  • Radio powerhouse B96
  • Ravinia Festival
  • Universal Records

Teaching

If you major in music education, you’ll work with professionals in the field in at least two schools and at two different levels before you graduate. All music education majors are encouraged to gain experience through teaching private lessons, coaching ensembles and conducting sectionals and large ensembles.

Professional Networking

Elmhurst is located in one of the largest media centers in the nation, and our studio teachers are among the best in the music industry. Opportunities abound for Elmhurst students to make professional connections in all areas of music.

Travel

Elmhurst students recently practiced their skills through performances in Chicago, New York City, Canada, Jamaica, Serbia, Germany and Australia, among others. The West Jamaica International Music Festival, for example, is a highlight of an annual two-week long Educational Experiences in Jamaica class offered during January Term. It is open to all students, regardless of major.
