Special Congratulations to Dr. Fred Gretsch

Elmhurst University alumnus Fred Gretsch and wife Dinah Gretsch pose for a photograph with guitars made by their company.

Fred ’71 and Dinah Gretsch

On May 22, 2021, Elmhurst University held its annual undergraduate Commencement, with hundreds of students crossing the stage to receive their diplomas. Fifty years ago, in 1971, Dr. Fred Gretsch received his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College. In 2016, Elmhurst University awarded him an honorary doctorate. Fred and his wife, Dinah, have become two of the most successful and inspiring people in the Music Industry, leading The Gretsch Company for decades. One can find Gretsch guitars and drums being played in 111 countries around the globe, and their philanthropic endeavors have enriched countless numbers of people, both young and old, through participation in music.

The Gretsch family and Foundation have been extremely generous to numerous schools and organizations, and especially to Elmhurst University through many gifts and scholarships. We are deeply grateful for the relationship we all enjoy, as the Gretsch name is forever embodied within the history, the present, and future of the University and its Music Department. Here, we are linking to an article that appeared in Prospect magazine in 2019 that will provide even greater insight into these amazing people. Congratulations, Dr. Fred Gretsch, on the 50th anniversary of your graduation from Elmhurst University!
